LOL Report, July 31, 1935
Since Aug. 27, 1928 the present chairman has been serving as chairman of the House committee and wishes to make tonight the final report after seven years of service.
Regular meetings have been held throughout the year by the Men’s Civic Club, Woman’s Club, Parent Teachers Association, Town Board, Board of Review, town elections, and other community gatherings including two band concerts by Eagle River and Watersmeet High School bands, two moving picture entertainments, piano lessons each Saturday afternoon during the winter by Miss Shattuck of Eagle River, several matched games of basket ball with outside teams, a dinner for the school picnic, two political rallies, and a Golden Wedding anniversary in honor of Mr. & Mrs. A.J.Bates.
The chairman cooperated with others in conducting the annual canvass for Red Cross memberships, also with J.F.Handles and County News Review in the interest of the proposed American Legion Memorial Bldg at Eagle River.
The Parent Teachers held three card parties and brought the quartet from Stevens Point Teachers College here for a concert. Sufficient funds were raised to send the members of the eighth grade graduating class to Madison including a stop at Wisconsin Dells. This is the first time such a project has been attempted in Land O’Lakes
Arrangements have been for use of the building on Sundays for worship. The Roman Catholics use the building at a stated time Sunday morning while the Protestants use it in the evening. This plan is working out harmoniously and to the satisfaction of local people and summer visitors who wish to take advantage of opportunity for worship during the vacation period.
The House committee feels that the outstanding event of the year is the action of the local people to keep the building open during the winter months when it seemed unlikely that we would receive the usual appropriation from the town board. To meet this emergency the Woman’s Club gave $50.00, the High school students promoted a dance from which $46.00 was realized. The balance was raised by selling membership tickets at $2.00 entitling the owner to building privileges. A charge of ten cents was made for those who wished to play volley ball or basketball and did not wish to purchase a season ticket. With these contributions from November to April the building was used practically every night. A word of thanks is due Harlan Pitts and Cora Dickman for promoting and supervising the dance which was well attended. It proves that the younger generation is rapidly developing leadership and taking initiative in promoting community activities.
The committee wishes to thank the members of the various clubs as well as all individuals who contributes toward this emergency fund. The canvass was conclusive proof that the local people appreciate the Community House and are determined to see that it is properly maintained.
A vote of thanks is due Walter A. Henning, a member of the CCC camp locate near the village last winter eradicating white pine blister rust. At the request of the member of the House committee he prepared a map showing the drainage area of upper Vilas conty with parts of Michigan. The map shows drainage in four directions, north, southeast, south and east, south and south west. It also shows State Line townships the fifth highest point in Wisconsin
Respictfully submitted, C.W.Warren, Chairman
