I went to Tanzania in eastern Africa recently and climbed to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. There will be pictures and a writeup on that. Some of what I saw there made me think.
Schools were everywhere. It was surprising. On the thirty mile drive from the airport to our hotel, it seemed like every side road led off to another school. Girl’s school, Boy’s school, Bible school, elementary school, high school, trade school. Schools of every name and description. Every morning and afternoon we saw packs of kids in school uniforms everywhere. These people are serious about sending their kids to school.
Our guide didn’t seem to think that any of this was unusual. It was just how things were. Lots of schools, lots of kids in schools. The state supports all the schools.
These people will be coming to eat our lunch. They aren’t any dumber than you or me, and they’re sending their kids to school. They are perfectly aware they live in a third world country, and they are doing everything they can so that the next generation will have it better. By the time the kids grow up, they’ll be competing against the USA for the world’s business.
We here in the USA had better take notice. There are whole countries full of people out there watching us fight amongst ourselves. They just chuckle at the things we choose to get outraged about. When we’re done ripping our country apart, they’ll be right there to pick up the pieces.
They’re coming for us. For our leadership, for our creativity, for our income. We have so much here in the USA. What we have, they want. If we don’t work together, we’re throwing it away. The rest of the world will be right there to take over.
